Denmark: cargo trikes & cycle tracks

In August 2011, I visited Denmark for about two weeks and was struck by the number of trikes, essentially adult tricycles, used by the Danes. It was also remarkeable to see a culture where bikes had their own lane, called cycle tracks, that are separated from cars and pedestrians by their own curbs.
It completely changed my thinking about biking culture. The cargo trikes, the SUV-equivalent of bicycles, in my opinion, provide easy storage and balance that allow parents of small children and the elderly to be part of what is largely a young person or hipster’s domain in the U.S. The cycle tracks encourage confidence in those who might otherwise be intimidated and deterred to bike alongside city traffic.
